Atlantic Rainforest trip update
Participants on our annual tour to the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest flew out to Rio de Janeiro last weekend and Limosa guide David Walsh has been in touch to advise that the trip is going very well and reports as follows:
“The Limosa group in Brazil has enjoyed a cracking start to our tour. Based at a comfortable lodge at REGUA in the Atlantic rainforest, on our first morning we saw Toco Toucan, Pearly-breasted Cuckoo and White Woodpecker in the grounds of our base before strolling down to the recently created wetlands. Chestnut-backed Antshrike and Silvery-flanked Antwren were just two of many species affording superb views at point blank range!
On our second day we headed north through the mountains to the dry forest near Carmo. Three-toed Jacamar, Serra Antwren and White-eared Puffbird duly obliged and we had bonus sightings of Chaco Eagle – perched and in flight – plus the colourful Campo Troupial.
Yesterday we walked up a trail not far from the lodge and patience was rewarded when we watched a Rufous-capped Antthrush on the forest floor then Black-throated Trogon and Spot-billed Toucanet above us. Late afternoon we headed to a marsh where the ‘must-see’ bird on this holiday, Giant Snipe, gave us a once in a lifetime experience as it fed quietly seemingly oblivious to our presence.
We have had plenty of time to enjoy watching and photographing everything we have seen, yet without rushing around we have tallied 188 species in three days not least because of Adelei our unrivalled guide. With the weather set fair we look forward to more.”
