Remote Amazon 2022

The Limosa/WildWings “Remote Amazon” birds and wildlife cruise concluded last weekend and the trip went extremely well with a fantastic range of species being seen.

The headline bird on the pre-cruise extension was Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock and the group spent two nights at a comfortable lodge about 2.5 hours to the north of Manaus where we enjoyed some great views of at least eight males at a lek. To describe the experience as “stunning” cannot be described as an exaggeration…….

The cruise itself proved very successful with highlights including Razor-billed Curassow, Agami Heron, Hoatzin, Sunbittern, Harpy Eagle, Amazonian Pygmy Owl, Bronzy Jacamar, Tawny-tufted Toucanet, Red-bellied, Blue-and-yellow, Chestnut-fronted, Scarlet and Red-and-green Macaws, Glossy Antshrike, Capuchinbird, Pomapadour Cotinga, Wire-tailed Manakin, Musician Wren and Oriole Blackbird.

A great range of mammals were also found with more or less daily sightings of both Amazon River (Pink) Dolphin and Tucuxi; indeed, many of the group enjoyed the amazing experience of getting in the water with a pod of completely wild river dolphins which choose to interact with humans. A very special and privileged experience.

Other mammals seen included the poorly known Bushy-tailed Opossum, both Brown-throated and Pale-throated Sloths, the critically endangered Pied Tamarin, three species of squirrel monkeys, Spix’s Night Monkey, Spix’s Black-headed Uacari, Guianan Bearded Saki and Giant Otter.
