Travel with guide Gary Elton to Greece in January for an exploration of wonderful Lake Kerkini and you can expect not only to enjoy incredible CLOSE encounters with the rare Dalmatian Pelican, but see a host of other '5-star' birds such as Greater Spotted Eagle, too.

Lake Kerkini is the most important wintering site in Europe for the globally threatened Dalmatian Pelican and the rare Greater Spotted Eagle. This peak season trip also boasts chances of Lesser White-fronted Goose, Pygmy Cormorant, Greater Flamingo, White-tailed Eagle, Syrian Woodpecker, Western Rock Nuthatch, Sombre Tit and Hawfinch among a very fine supporting cast that's right out of the birding top drawer!

But the centrepiece of this single-centre trip remains our boat trip onto the lake. As we set off across the glassy waters, with the huge sky and snowy mountain backdrop reflecting in the mirror surface, Dalmatian Pelicans begin to gather and wait for food. Getting so close to these rare and majestic birds is truly a moment you will never forget!

Participants on our last three tours have all enjoyed stunning close encounters with the pelicans - and superb views of Greater Spotted Eagles, too.
