Trip Report
Wild Goose Chase!
Wed 3rd - Sun 7th December 2003
Leaders: Arnoud van den Berg
Trip Diary
This was the 11th Limosa winter tour in Holland, and the eighth to run in early December. The tour produced a total of 120 species (and 9 mammal species). Two nights were spent at Koudum, Friesland, and two in Harderwijk. The first three days were fully overcast, with a north-easterly wind and moderate temperatures ranging from 6 to 9C. On the morning of the third day, there was a sun haze and no wind but in the afternoon it was fully clouded again. On the fourth day, however, it became sunny and cold, with temperatures dropping to 4C in midday and below zero after sunset, while there was little if any wind. Our final day was bright, cold and sunny without any clouds and temperatures as low as -4C in early morning and not higher than +2C in the middle of the day.
Rarities found during the tour included two Lesser White-fronted Geese and two juvenile White-tailed Eagles. Other group favourites were two Long-tailed Ducks, a male Red-crested Pochard, many Great White Egrets (no less 32 at five sites in fact), an adult male Rough-legged Buzzard, two Goshawks, a Merlin, several Peregrines, Water Rail, 200 Avocets, 50 Ruff, 2 Barn, 5 Long-eared and 2 Little Owls, Black and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers, Firecrest, Great Grey Shrike, Bearded, Willow and Crested Tits, Hawfinch and 180 Snow Bunting.
Day 1. Wednesday 3rd.
By 10:00, we were all on our way in our minibus to Holland's North Sea coast. We dropped our luggage in Santpoort-Zuid where we got our birding gear ready and had a taste of coffee with St Nicholas' almond pastry. At the nearby IJmuiden beach, we went to the reedy shores of the Kennemermeer lake. We tried in vain for a Jack Snipe along the lake's shore but watched five Common Snipes instead. Along the lake, Arnoud provoked an excited response by two Water Rails which came very close but managed to remain out of sight. Scanning the lake revealed two female-type Long-tailed Ducks and a variety of waders. At 12:00, it was time to pick-up our luggage and have a second look at the Santpoort-Zuid bird-feeders; a Wood Mouse appeared but the local Bramblings had decided not to join Chaffinches and Greenfinches this day! We drove north-east to Wieringermeer polder, buying our lunch at a bakery in the Middenmeer, where we watched three Long-eared Owls in a garden. Just outside Middenmeer, we had an appointment with two local birders, Luc Smit and Laurens van der Vaart, who assisted us in our mission to see the dark Dutch subspecies of Barn Owl. High in the huge and dark barn, one bird perched, well-lit by Arnoud's torch. Even the farmer's wife and her children enjoyed the views through our telescopes. One bird left the barn and could be seen in some coniferous trees in the farm's garden. To add to the excitement, a Firecrest appeared and found its way to the very same tree. Our next goal was a nesting site of Little Owl. Luck was with us, as one Little Owl was sitting right in the open in a tree. By now, it was time to say goodbye to Luc and Laurens and to leave for the Wadden Sea mudflats as it was going to be high tide. Despite the chilly wind, we enjoyed a great number of waders roosting on the remaining muddy shores, including Avocets, Ringed Plovers, Oystercatchers, Bar-tailed Godwits, Common Redshanks, Curlews, Dunlins, etc. In the harbour, we watched a variety of ducks like Mergansers, Goosanders, Eiders and a female Scaup, while two Hooded Crows and a Peregrine flew past. Just before dusk, we took off for the 30 km long Afsluitdijk sea-dike connecting Holland and Friesland, making a cosy coffee stop with apple pie. Arriving in Friesland at last light, we watched thousands of geese flying over the highway towards their night roosts. Our hotel had surprisingly spacious rooms for us, and a fine dinner.
Day 2. Thursday 4th. After our breakfast, we left Galamadammen at 08:00 for a day's birding in the Lauwersmeer wetlands, in the extreme north-east of Friesland. Before reaching Lauwersmeer, we stopped at a roosting tree of Long-eared Owls. One bird was sitting completely free of foliage and, if it had not been such a dark day, it would have made for beautiful pictures. Our next stops were in the Anjum area, where we had breathtaking views at close range of enormous flocks of Barnacle Geese with small numbers of White-fronted Geese. Before lunch, we went for a dike overlooking the Ezumakeeg wetlands. A nice variety of birds here included Hen Harriers, a perched female Merlin, Whooper Swans, our first of many Great White Egrets, and our first Smew (trying to hide in the reeds). We had a coffee stop and lunch at the Lauwersoog harbour while watching a Grey Seal and tame Turnstones. The woodlands offered less than expected, but we enjoyed a variety of passerines, including Redwings, Fieldfares and Siskins, taking a bath in little road pools. Venturing further, our best sightings concerned a nearby foraging flock of male Pintails, close encounters with swimming Bewick's and Whooper Swans, and a Rough-legged Buzzard flying past. In the afternoon, westwards past Wierum and Holwerd, we stopped to enjoy a very large geese flock mostly consisting of Tundra Bean Geese with some White-fronted and Barnacle and a handful Pink-footed. At the Holwerd, we waited in vain for Short-eared Owls. After dusk, we headed back for our second night at our comfortable hotel. The day before St Nicholas' Eve, we were not forgotten by his holiness as each of us received a traditional chocolate letter.
Day 3. Friday 5th. On our third day we visited the geese areas between our hotel and the picturesque Frisian towns of Workum and Makkum. We enjoyed many excellent views of the common geese species while finding twice a Lesser White-fronted Goose, tens of minima Lesser Canada Geese, and one sizable flock of Pink-footed Geese. In one of the roadside reedbeds, we had nice views of male Bearded Tits. Our first Goshawk surprised us by perching in a Common Buzzard fashion in an open meadow. Amidst all the geese, we watched many Curlews and a flock of 50 Ruff. We had a close encounter with a Peregrine attacking a Barnacle Goose. A few Tree Sparrows were showing well in roadside trees. We photographed a beautiful male Eider at the Afsluitdijk. And, just before lunch, we found a large and lively flock of 180 Snow Buntings foraging along the road. We enjoyed coffee and apple pie in the town of Makkum, where we had a surprise meeting with a `real' St Nicholas and two blackamoor helpers. In the afternoon, we drove south towards Flevoland where we visited the mouth of the IJssel river. The best sightings concerned a male Smew in a small group of females, a group of 13 Great White Egrets surrounded by foraging Goosanders, and a huge roosting flock of Curlews, Lapwings, Golden Plovers and Dunlins on a sand bank. After dusk, at St Nicholas' Eve, we arrived at our Harderwijk hotel, for another fine dinner.
Day 4. Saturday 6th. The weather had changed for the better. We had breakfast at 07:00 in order to be out at dawn in the Veluwe forests. We arrived on time to see a pair of Black Woodpeckers leaving their holes. We continued birding in the vast forests, savouring close encounters with birds like Short-toed Treecreepers, Marsh Tits, Crested Tits, Goldcrests and a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. It was 11:00 by the time we headed away from the old forested land above sea level to the new Flevoland polder, below sea level. We visited the lower of two observation hills along Praamweg. Soon, we discovered two juvenile White-tailed Eagles which seemed to be attracted by a carcass. Our excitement about these birds had a surprising effect as we were suddenly surrounded by c 30 Dutch birders who had been searching for the eagles all morning! In addition to the eagles, which performed nicely, we watched an adult Peregrine, several Great White Egrets, and a variety of waders and wildfowl. Over lunch at Praamweg, we watched an adult male Rough-legged Buzzard and a Great Grey Shrike. We then had coffee at the information centre, from where we followed a path into the old willow forest. Here, we found not only several Willow Tits but also two Chiffchaffs. A little play-back of sounds produced a Water Rail running in front of the De Kluut hide. In the afternoon, we returned to forests in the Harderwijk area, where we watched a second pair of Black Woodpeckers entering their holes. We returned to our nearby hotel for our 'farewell' dinner.
Day 5. Sunday 7th. After breakfast at 08:00, we left the hotel for our final day of birding. The weather had changed completely and it was a freezing, bright and sunny day with no wind. We started along the reedy shores of Harderbroek, finding some redhead Smew. In an agricultural field north of Zeewolde, we encountered a surprisingly large flock of Golden Plover and Lapwing. In Zeewolde itself, a visit to a roadside suburban garden produced brilliant views of Hawfinches. There were many other birds here as well, such as a male Bullfinch, Siskins and Redwings. We continued towards Praamweg, to visit the higher of the two observation hills. It appeared that most birds had fled the area, probably because of the sudden frost, but we had nice views of two Red Foxes. Yesterday's adult male Rough-legged Buzzard and Great Grey Shrike offered even better views than before. We had a coffee break at the reserve's information centre, where we watched a Green Sandpiper and two Bearded Tits. At noon, we set off in the direction of the airport, stopping for a group of Goosanders on the way, and visited the Botshol (where a Ferruginous Duck had been seen the previous day). We found a male Red-crested Pochard amidst a variety of wildfowl and two Goshawks came into view to be observed at length by telescope. In the nearby meadows, we found our last Great White Egret and the tour ended in an apt way by a surprise find of a roosting Little Owl on a barn. At 15:00, we arrived at the airport for our flight back to London.
