Louis Masarei

Louis is ‘our man in Australia’ and is a born and bred Western Australian. His passion for the avian world began when as a small boy he used to watch the Carnaby’s Black Cockatoos and corellas (a smaller species of cockatoo) flying to their roosts in the suburbs of is home city of Perth. His interest was fostered further by extensive travel throughout Western Australia and South-East Asia which was eventually formalised by studying Conservation Biology and Marine Science at the University of Western Australia.

In his early career, Louis worked as a lab technician in a marine science laboratory focussing on fish conservation, however, he always had one eye to the sky when working in remote places such as the Chagos Archipelago, Ashmore Reef, Christmas and Cocos Islands and the Torres Strait.

These experiences have helped him build a successful career as a zoologist specialising in the wonders of Australia's terrestrial vertebrate fauna. He does have a very strong focus on birdlife (which some would call an obsession) and this has led him to see over 450 species in his native state of Western Australia.

Alongside Louis’ work as a consulting zoologist and ornithologist, he also enjoys working as a birding guide both at home in Western Australia and throughout the rest of the continent. He has a passion for Australia's unique set of endemic birds and enjoys sharing this with likeminded clients.
